It's true online and offline - you'll have to invest if you want to make money!

Says Seth Godin.

And he elaborates on his blog post “Pay For Stuff”.

I’ve noticed this: we’re caught up in a status quo that says we can learn everything we want to know about online marketing for free. There are plenty of tutorial pages on just about all aspects of creating online income available on the web. So, why pay for it?

I’ve spent hundreds of hours trying to learn for free what others would have taught me in a tiny fraction of that time, for under $100. So, why did I not pay for it?

It’s an interesting question I ask myself often when I witness the struggle of my peers. By now, I’ve bought one incredibly valuable online marketing course and a couple extremely useful tools. I wish I had bought these one year ago – it would have saved me a lot of time!

There’s probably nothing I can do to shorten the time of our individual learning paths. And I don’t even know whether my recommendations to someone are the best piece of advice at the right point of time in their online adventures. But I know this from my offline small business experience – if I want to make money, I have to invest. It’s either money or time, but invest I must!

The question is which is more efficient – a relatively small amount of money or a huge investment of time?

It’s smart to invest some money if we want to make money online!

Two products helped me a lot over the last year, so I recommend them here. Both offer great ways to try them out before you buy. One Week Marketing offers a FREE e-book and Animoto let’s you sign up for FREE to make 30-second videos. For unlimited access to full-length video production pay only $30 per year.

Both products are outright cheap for their value.

Create income organically - without manipulating your prospects. Chris Guillebeau shows us how...

The inspiration for the following thoughts came from a blog post by Chris Guillebeau: “Why People Hate Marketers”. Go ahead and read it. If you never come back here for the rest of my post – you’ll have nonetheless gotten more than your “money’s worth” from Chris…

In a nut shell, Chris describes his reaction to an email with well-meant marketing advice. “John” suggested that Chris shouldn’t allow people to download his free e-manifesto, “279 Days To Overnight Success”, without collecting their email address first. “You’d be building an email list of followers who’ll eventually turn into customers, clients, etc.”, said John. But Chris knew that, of course.

What fascinates me about Chris is his purity of mind and purpose as witnessed in his response to the writer. It’s not about creating the image of a generous blogger and social media hot-shot…it’s about “living the giving”.

If we all are marketers, so is Chris. But Chris Guillebeau is a “naked” marketer!

By that I mean: He’s not trying to make money online – no ‘tit for tat’ e-mail freebies, no sneaky manipulation to sign-up-for or buy anything, no hidden agenda…only pure sharing for the sake of generosity. Period. And he creates online income…

How Can I Make Money Online Without Trying?

I have to admit – I’m trying. Hard. But I also watch Chris, and I try to learn something I seem to know deep in my heart, already: Giving is a self-fulfilling energy which attracts receiving, no matter what. It is a full-time activity without any further requirements. It’s like working for work’s sake – not for the salary. It’s a bit mystical for most of us – but it’s real.

Chris demonstrates this – he’s interesting, authentic, authoritative in his niche, remarkable, unique…all the good qualities we’re told are essential for a successful online business. Yet, he’s not scheming conversions, manipulating prospects, exploiting scarcity…other important skills to make money online. (Or so they tell us.)

Down the road, I’d like to be able to say – I made good money, but I made it organically. It came to me because I helped a lot of people with good service, whatever kind it might have been. I did not force my financial wealth by manipulating others – that wouldn’t feel good at all.

So, I’ll be watching Chris for further instructions.

Oh, and…thanks, man!

Squidoo lensmaster PotPieGirl aka Jennifer Ledbetter accepted our exclusive SquidLog interview request. Here is her response…
________________________________________________________________________________

First off, before we even start, I’d like to say ‘thank you’ for inviting me here to talk with you, Chef Keem. I’m a little nervous about the questions to come, tho! hahaha! I am well aware that there are folks out there that don’t like what I do or how I do it – and that’s perfectly fair. Besides, if no one talks about you (both good AND bad) then you must not be doing anything worth talking about, right? At least that is when I tell myself when I get my little feelings hurt over something I read online.

So, let’s start… Hit me with your best shot!
________________________________________________________________________________

Question: Many lensmasters (including myself) consider you one of the most generous and giving members of our Squidoo community. Over the last 9 months or so, I’ve heard several voices complain about your marketing system of cranking out “content-poor” lenses, built around slight variations of niche keywords. Even the words “junk” and “spammy” floated around in some of those critiques. What is your response to such comments?

PPG: THANK YOU! I really do try to do and give as much as this one little woman can do on her own.

I’ve read a few negative things like that, too. Thankfully, not many at all. For those that have read One Week Marketing, they know full-well that I do NOT advocate cranking out junk OR spamming the Squidoo site. That would be ridiculous, wouldn’t it? Seriously, who would that help? Certainly not the Squidoo site… certainly not the vendors that are being promoted… and certainly not the lensmaster. Also, I have to mention, how would that help ME to teach others to do that?

I have a lot of lenses on Squidoo. If I opted to teach others how to spam or ‘junk-up’ the site, what would that do to MY lenses? I’m not one of “those people” that do a drive-by of Squidoo and decide to create an eBook on how to use Squidoo as some marketing trick. I’ve been on Squidoo since early 2007 and I love the site.

However, I also know what it takes to get FOUND online. Creating a single page targeting a single keyword phrase is a good SEO strategy. No, I don’t mean stuff that keyword everywhere on the page you can manage to type it, I mean FOCUS in on a single topic/phrase and then optimize for it. That’s how a properly optimized website is built – with individual targeted, focused, interlinked, linked in, linked out, and optimized web pages.

Bringing targeted organic traffic to Squidoo.com from Google and other search engines and encouraging page views is nothing but a good thing for all of us.

But to the “voices” who have negative things to say about “my marketing system”, I will say this – If anyone who has actually read One Week Marketing feels I am teaching them to abuse the site, please contact me because I am being completely mis-understood.

That’s all I have to say about that. I don’t do negative and I don’t dwell on it, either.
________________________________________________________________________________

Question: I remember reading especially one negative blurb – where someone accused you of teaching your online marketing “short-cuts” to newbies, and thus preventing them from developing their own creativity for content-rich lens building. That person opined that “you should know better than that!” What are your thoughts on this?

PPG: Know better than what? I don’t believe that anyone who has read OWM feels that I am preventing them from developing their own creativity for content-rich lenses. In fact, perhaps just the opposite!

I don’t know about the rest of you, but when I first tried to make a Squidoo lens way back in February of 2007, I was dazed and TOTALLY confused. Forget “creativity” at that point, I was having a hard enough time trying to figure out how to MAKE a lens – as in, the total basics.

It was downright intimidating and I gave Squidoo up for quite a few months because it seemed to be just too hard to figure out.

Here is what I “know better” – unless you help people PAST the intimidation and help them get the basics comfortable under their belt, people will give up. That breaks my heart. The internet is full of endless opportunities for folks to make a change in their lives.

Not just a financial change, but one of those deep, empowering changes. I consider myself the poster child for this movement. It happened for me, and it CAN happen for YOU, too.

Therefore, I talk about my experiences and things I’ve learned and do all I feel I can to keep people involved and moving forward towards their goals.

But people still give up…and I can’t stand it. It left me wondering what I else can do to help others along.

So, I give them my very basic recipe in my Free Squidoo 101 Guide, and then yes, I sell (gasp!) my more advanced recipe in my One Week Marketing.

My hope is that others will get past the intimidation, NOT give up, and then comfortably add and edit to MY recipe and make it their own.

It’s amazing how creative you can be once you are comfortable with the platform.

Thing is, what I don’t think many people know about me is that I am much more than just someone who makes Squidoo lenses for money and then sells an ebook about it.

That is totally not my business model at all. In fact, the only person that can call Squidoo his/her business model is Seth Godin. The site belongs to him and to Squidoo LLC. As we Squidoo fans also know, Seth Godin is also much, much more than Squidoo.com. He doesn’t have all his eggs in one basket, so why would we?

One Week Marketing is NOT only about making Squidoo lenses to make money online. One Week Marketing IS a system for using free websites that are available to all of us to begin to generate an income online. Squidoo happens to be my favorite of all ‘user-generated’ sites. I am familiar with it and I feel I know it (and the other methods I teach) well enough to be qualified to teach it.

However, I do not advocate Squidoo lenses being a sole business model. Building someone else’s site is not an online business model that I would personally choose or recommend.

I highly recommend my readers to begin with One Week Marketing to learn their basics, get comfortable, let the fog caused by info-overload clear, and find their niche(s) where they can make money and enjoy it. THEN, I am ready at 6StepNicheSites.com to walk them thru the process of making their OWN sites. And I teach that for free.

But the first step is STARTING. For those that have limited resources, we have to learn how to be resourceFUL….I know I sure did! Having the option to create web pages on free-to-use sites like Squidoo and HubPages and WetPaint and Blogger and Zimbio and BlogSome and…and… and.. sorry, that list goes on and on… but the point is that for many of us everyday folks, we don’t have the money, the experience, OR the comfort level to start out with our own sites. These free-to-use sites give us a place to start. Then you grow and you start making more eggs in more baskets and creating many streams of income online all coming back to you.

My goal is to help as many people get started as I possibly can. I believe in what I do and I believe in the possibility and the potential for others to do it, too.

That’s what I ‘know better’.
________________________________________________________________________________

Question: Your “One Week Marketing” course is recognized as one of the best-selling programs for online income creation. The web is overflowing with praise and positive testimonials. Are all these people affiliate marketers trying to make a buck off your work, or do you have definite, honest proof of “success stories” from folks who bought (and worked) OWM?

PPG: Yes, I have positive, definite, honest, genuine, and unsolicited proof and success stories from those that are loving One Week Marketing. I get “first sale!” emails everyday – I get ‘thank you’ emails like crazy. It feels great to know that the action plan I created to help MYSELF is really helping others that follow it. That’s exactly why it was created and put on the market – my readers ASKED for it…and they told me to sell it.

It took me months to organize all my notes and put it all together, but that wasn’t enough for me. I needed to prove to MYSELF that I could walk someone through what I do and they would see success with OWM, too. That is why I waited even longer and took on Nick as my case study (which is also included in OWM).

Know what the biggest honor to me is? Those that choose to promote One Week Marketing do so because they love it. When OWM first launched, I told a few (like less than 5 ) other marketers about it. These were folks I talked with often, worked with, bounced ideas off of and the like. I didn’t recruit JVs or big “gurus” or anything like that. In fact, I am kinda tough to get a review copy out of. Not because I am selfish, but because I know there are lots and lots of great folks that are really proud to promote One Week Marketing and working really hard at it, and I am not helping THEM at ALL by freely handing out copies to anyone who asks.

Beside, I would rather someone invest their own money into OWM and then really decide, ‘Hey, this is great stuff. I WANT to tell others about it” – not promote it because I handed out free copies like candy.

And that is how One Week Marketing has grown – on it’s own. I’ve had many prominent marketers buy OWM and then contact ME to ask about promoting it, but I haven’t sought anyone out.

For the most part, people promote One Week Marketing because they are excited to talk about it and because it helped THEM.

That is the power of recommendation at work.

As for “proof” – yes, I have plenty…lots and lots. However, a lot of these emails contain things that are personal and I don’t feel comfortable copy/pasting their words here without their permission.

So, what I will do is this…

Once this interview goes live, I will invite my wonderful readers here. If they feel so inclined, they will share their own stories of success from One Week Marketing. To me, their story is THEIR story…not mine.
________________________________________________________________________________

Question: Considering the recent changes of Squidoo’s TOS – no more weight-loss, medical cures, getting your ex back, gambling, credit card and ringtone offers, etc. – what is your advice for lensmasters who are “in it” only for the money? I mean – even lenses promoting other affiliate programs might get frowned upon due to extreme spam abuse in the past. Is Squidoo still a good platform for the hot-blooded online marketer?

PPG: “Hot-blooded” online marketers? Can we stop so I can laugh at that for a moment? Ok, I’m good… thank you.

I’m sorry, but I get amused at statements like that. It seems there are two opposites when it comes to the Squidoo mentality. Those that use Squidoo as a hobby…and those that want to actually make some money from their lenses.

WHY is it so awful to want to make money from the content you create? Or perhaps “making money” should be wayyyy down the list of reasons why?

It’s “funny” to me when I read in SquidU the non-tolerance some have for “people like me” that want to make money for their lenses – and then, in another post, the same person will complain that Squidoo earnings are down or that their lens can’t be found in Google.

I know I will get blasted for saying that – and that’s fine.

Here’s the thing… Squidoo and online marketing are not a hobby for me. Nor is it a hobby for lots of people you meet online. If it is YOUR hobby, great! I have no issue with that and would never put you down for it. It IS cool to create a web page and find your voice online. It’s just plain awesome!

But perhaps you could stop for a moment and realize that some of us do this for a living. Our greatest asset is our time. If we take time to create a web page is that builds SOMEONE ELSE’S site, it should have a purpose for us, too.

Maybe that appears as if we are “in it only for the money” – if so, that has to be ok. I spend hours and hours each day helping others and spend it building my business. It IS a business – and Squidoo is a business, too.

In exchange for your unique content, you get to make some money and/or link out to your site (or product or offer or community or eBay store, etc etc etc).

But, to get back on topic here (imagine that, ME wandering off topic…lol)…

Yes, Squidoo has now changed the topics that are allowed on the site. Is it still a good platform for marketers? Yes, I believe it is. The now banned topics are FAR from the only profitable niches online. I’ve made more money from ‘off-beat’ products than the main-stream “everyone else is doing it” topics. that’s for sure.

Is it still a good platform for random “drive-by” marketers? No, probably not. That, in my opinion, is exactly why these new policy changes were put in place… to help curb the random ‘drive-by’ lenses. That will help all of us that are willing to put a little thought into our work and NOT do what everyone else is doing.

I know what else is out there regarding Squidoo marketing… I’m very aware of it all. Squidoo is not a “drive-by” trick by any means. It takes effort (gasp) and once it is clear that it takes effort, then many of the drive-by’s will stop.

Sadly, there are lenses on the now “no no” topics that are good – really good – but the drive-by’s ruined it for all of us. Nothing we can do – it’s not our site and we don’t make the rules.
________________________________________________________________________________

Question: The last question is a bit cheeky but extremely important, I think.

As an ambitious online marketer -

How…
How much…
How long…
How often…
…do I have to “give” before I can expect to “receive”?

PPG: Well, well… what a question! Giving is not a mathematical equation – i.e. you can’t say “give 5 times and get once” – that’s ridiculous!

Giving is a genuine mentality. Giving with expectations is a problem – online AND offline.

Thing is, dear Chef, you answered this question yourself in your ROI of Giving post.

When you come online, no one knows who you are. Worse yet, many people have been burned online by scams and bad information. Not only do you have to build trust, you also have to pretty much un-do their ideas of “all online marketers”.

We aren’t all bad. In fact, I think the good:bad ratio is still heavily in favor of the good guys (and gals).

If you can get people to listen to you and ask you questions, you are definitely headed in the right direction.

How do you get people to listen to you? By telling them how much money you make? By touting your achievements?

No, you get people to listen to YOU by listening to them. If your content is answering things they want to know as opposed to what you want to tell, you will begin to have regular readers and the cycle begins.

As Seth Godin says on page 128 of “Tribes” – “People want to be sure you heard what they said – they’re less focused on whether or not you do what they said.”

When I read that, I naturally applied it to myself and to my business plans. To me, it meant that if I took the time to get out there and LISTEN to what people want to know and then talk about those topics, people just might start coming to me so I could LISTEN some more. Over time, trust is built and the “getting” part begins.

This works in any market, but it’s not a marketing trick. It is an on-going and genuine mentality for the way you approach your work and your life.

Oddly, once you embrace that mentality, the “getting” part happens and you’re barely aware of it.

How long? I have no idea. How long will it take for one person to really start listening to their target market and then GIVING them what they want without expectation?

That’s how long.
________________________________________________________________________________

Write for Data from Star Trek first - search bots don't understand flirting!

Let’s say you’re barhopping…cruising for company…

You look as cute as a button

You surround yourself with a touch of mystery

You sprinkle the conversation with a bit of innuendo

Your facial expressions bedazzle everyone around you

Your scent is intoxicating

Your accent is “so charming”

Your use of metaphors is enchanting

You punch ‘em out with your puns

Boy are YOU going to GET FOUND!

You’ll be placed on a pedestal

Your audience is fighting over you

You are number one!

What if you apply this flirting technique to writing for the web?

Welcome to “Wall Flower City!”
Why? Search robots ain’t salivating humans, that’s why.

Writing for the internet is no beauty contest – nobody sees you

Cute innuendo cleverly packaged in mysterious metaphors means absolutely nothing to search bots. They won’t get it! Period.

You may wink at your reflection from the computer screen, but the only “broad” you’ll intoxicate with your cologne is the broad named “band”.

‘Bots and puns’ belong into the kitchen only.

So, if you’re selling gift boxes of chocolate mint wafers online, and you describe them with “silken sheets of sweet nothing…for a romantic evening at home…you’ll want to kiss the pink glow of surprise off her cheeks” – Google will send you visitors looking for edible underwear.

Don’t phrase your headline “Even A Princess Breaks Wind During High Seas” – when your article tells us about mutual fears among rich or poor folks. You’ll see a high bounce rate from people looking for fart jokes and/or planning their next Alaska cruise.

Case in point: Over at SquidLog.com, I once wrote a post about fearless marketing. I called it “Fearless Marketing 101 – Lessons From The Nudist Colony”. Guess which search term brings a ton of traffic to this post, with a bounce rate of 100 percent?

No, it’s not “marketing”. (And I did this on purpose. For fun. )

Remember Data from “Star Trek”? Impressive computational capabilities but unable to understand human behavior and emotions. Write for him!

This doesn’t mean you can’t weave a story through “rain like knitting needles” or “pillowy puffs of white smoke in celestial seas…”

For efficient online writing, though – take care of the dumbots first! Tell them what your story is all about – in titles, subtitles and body of text. Make sure they know the straight dope of your message.

After that, go dopey as hell. We like that.

Sexual innuendo and sexy pictures bring viewers. Do they bring customers?

Gillette released this video on YouTube and it had over a million views within a month:

Li’l old micro biz owner ME did a similar (playful) experiment last year: a cheeky, sexy video combining pin-ups with a pitch for my flavored agave nectar brand AGASWEET and the website address. Without any promo whatsoever, my video garnered over a quarter-million views to this date:

How To Shave Your Groin. Or, How To Sweeten Healthfully. Sex Sells?

Of course, no sales came from this clip. My visitors were attracted to the cleavage and couldn’t care less about my fabulously healthy, natural sweetener. It didn’t matter to me – I just wanted to play.

My budget for this project? 30 minutes of my time.

I’m wondering about Gillette’s strategy. How do they figure their ROI from this costly campaign? Is it all about initial brand recognition and info on the existence of their product? Do people run out and buy after seeing this cute video? What percentage of this clip’s viewers represents potential customers?

I’m really curious about this because I’m sure Gillette employs smart marketing folks.

Do you have any insights?

Content thieves make money from our hard work. Let's fight them!

It just happened to me again – Google Alerts sent me an email notification of a new post on a website I’ve never seen before. The headline and excerpt looked like something I’d written myself, not too long ago on one of my blogs. Lo and behold – someone has copied my previous post in its entirety and presented it as their own. That person needed quality content for their new blog, so they could make money from ad clicks in their side bars.

No specific back link to the original source and no mentioning of the original author – me. It’s called content theft, right?

What can I do when someone steals my original content?

I’d like to point you toward this excellent article written by my friend Erica, over at SquidLog.com:

“Imitation Is The Sincerest Form Of Flattery”

Erica gives us a brief definition of copyright as it relates to our own content, and then she explains a number of actions to take when content theft happens to us.

Furthermore, Erica links out to a couple of excellent articles on this subject. The procedures might look time-consuming at first, but in the end it is easier than we might think. However, it is important that we educate ourselves on these issues. Two reasons:

Content thieves steal our traffic! They must be shut down.

Appropriate counter actions need to be done in a professional way and in accordance with specific guidelines.

We might not be able to eliminate content theft completely, but we have the power to make it ever harder for online criminals to make money from our hard work.

By the way, the cute devil image in this post’s thumbnail comes from this free clip art site. Thank you.

You should! And here’s a great (free) tool to monitor any conversations about you or your product on the social media scene.

Go to socialmention.com

Enter your name or your brand into the search field and see what comes up. Select from the tabs where you want them to look for your info – blogs, micro blogs, bookmarks, comments, images, etc. or ALL.

You might be surprised to find out that nobody cares, or everyone raves about your latest recipe, or people borrow (Ahem!) your content for their blogs…it’s fascinating!

What is the centerpiece of my online presence and is it cooked right?

It’s all about soul, of course.

We have the perfect location and the most elegant dining room design.

Our dinner ware is made exclusively from Nymphenburg porcelain.

The wait staff is highly professional.

The garnishes are works of art.

A perfect steak dinner!

Chef, I’m sorry but the veal was a bit on the dry side!

Nothing else counts anymore – the experience is spoiled! The soul of the chef is missing…the weakest link is exposed and our entire campaign becomes useless. We’d have greater success with serving a moist, tender veal cutlet in a shack in the woods.

How Does This Apply To Personal Branding?

The essence of our expertise and integrity will always shine through in our marketing efforts. The true value of our product will be recognized, judged, and talked about. Good or bad.

Using the analogy of a perfectly cooked meal – these are some questions I must ask myself:

What is the center piece – the entree – of my online presence?

Is it cooked to perfection?

Would it attract interest without any additional hype or fluff?

A truly great steak would definitely fit the bill. Interior design, staff, dishes and garnish are only fringe benefits.

Quick – A Bad Case Scenario Of Personal Branding

Fancy website with all the latest connect widgets

Slick email newsletter

Powerful pitch page

Artificial positioning (”Aren’t you tired of these other guys…?”)

Questionable product value

A million of online marketers use exactly this system – the “steak” is far less important than the garnish. PR is everything, they say. It doesn’t matter what you sell, they say – as long as you market it right! What a crock (pot) of you-know-what…soon we’ll have a billion times the same phony messages – and nobody will care.

So, What Am I Selling And Why?

Do I use it?

Do I love it?

Can I stand 100 percent behind my recommendation?

Will it really help the customer?

Who am I?

What makes me an authority on this subject?

Where is my soul in all this…my personal integrity?

It may sound like over-the-top advice – but have I checked my motives, lately? Am I corrupting myself – maybe just a little bit – in my chase for the dollars? How deep am I willing to explore my soul? It’s so seductive to fall for the quick buck, so easy to compromise and rationalize…

Deep down we all know that the greatest rewards come from giving freely of ourselves – time, knowledge, value. What we get back is solid, long-lasting and high-quality compensation – effects of our honest cause. Money is just a side effect in this proven scheme of universal laws – it must follow because it is part of the whole, organic package.

A perfectly cooked steak makes people happy and steak houses profitable.

Character, integrity, honesty, and generosity do the same thing for our personal brand.
